Soul Keeper Synopsis:
Soul Keeper Synopsis:
It is two thousand years into the future after the Great Change, when the planet turned over, and the human species is down to about fifty million worldwide. Magic has reentered this world, and the environment is pristine.
And so it is, on a calm green sea sails the Taraway, an old two-piston wreck, carrying its crew of fishermen. The crew notices a strange thing: a damaged vessel surging through the water embroiled in its own personal storm, with a ravaged woman tied to the mast. She is stranded on the ocean terribly weakened, with a broken ship and no retinue. The kind captain and his crew take her in and become intoxicated by her beauty.
But she has guiled the crew into assisting her. In fact she is the queen of an alien race called the Voth. The queen is on a desperate mission across the world to save her species, a mission that -- if successful -- threatens to destroy all of humanity, putting an end to earth's peaceful existence.
Key to her success is her unborn child. This 'Hatchling' holds great powers and his sole purpose is to finish his mother's mission, a goal that will bring full magical abilities back to the Voth.
Yet as the Hatchling grows and experiences the world around him, he discovers that there is much more to his new life than what his mother had planned. Soon he learns to harness his developing powers.
But is it for good, or is it for evil?

He sensed two wolves that were about a mile away to his left, and he decided to try something new. He sent his mind out and gently entered into sync with the larger male. A beautiful healthy specimen weighing a good one hundred and eighty pounds or more. The wolf sensed the intrusion, stopped in its tracks, and looked for him. Its mate, a black female, turned back wondering what was wrong. George began to gain more control over the male wolf. Gently, gently…good! No panic, just a slightly puzzled animal. This felt good for George. The animal had a good feeding the previous night and his energy levels were sharp.
George and his new avatar took off for the snow-edged woods below. The black female followed. Was it a hunt? She didn’t smell anything, but she followed. She knew that when her partner got something in his mind he was hard to deter.
They came to the main trail (something they usually avoided) and turned west moving fast. George was exhilarated! He was in a body perfectly built to kill. George’s sense of smell in his own body was wonderfully acute, but this! This was amazing! He could smell where a bird landed on a branch by the road hours ago. He could smell mushrooms buried in the ground under the snow.
Now, at an easier energy-saving pace, the wolves coursed down the long incline to the green valley below. George had wondered if distance would affect his control over the big male, but he now realized that he could stay in this animal’s mind anywhere in its territory if he wanted to.
A few miles further he suddenly caught the smell of humans and horses. The female wolf stopped. They avoided humans and George could tell that the big male wanted to halt also. George dug deeper and forced him on and soon came into a notched cut of rock that the road went through. He heard the steady clop of hooves coming up the trail toward him. He stopped and stood in the middle of the road and waited for the humans to approach, the female wolf holding back in the distance, upset and nervous at this strange turn of events.
Through the wolf’s eyes, George saw the two riders turn the bend ahead and immediately catch sight of him. They stopped. George the Wolf walked forward.

From Chapter 14, "Anchorage"...
A moment later he came out and looked up the street. It wasn’t hard to spot the wealthy rubes. The big one with the money bag stood a good head taller than anyone else in the area.
Harry motioned his crew to follow as he led the way. They had done this many times before, and they fanned out into a well-practiced configuration of three men on either side of Harry in a “V” formation – the idea being of Harry quietly coming up behind the target and using his lead-filled sap to bring the victim down. If that didn’t work, then the knife. That done, his men would surround the action and keep any assistance to the target at bay. Now, the townspeople on the street that were observing this battle formation quickly started to vacate the area. They’d seen it before and didn’t want to see it again. It wasn’t pretty.
Harry liked doing this. Not for just the money, but also to make sure the people knew who controlled the street.
This kind of action left no doubt.
Approaching quickly and quietly toward the three marks, Harry let his weapon slide out of his sleeve and into the palm of his right hand. Three more quick steps, and a searing pain in his right shoulder! Stunned, he looked down and saw that a slim blade of dark steel had gone clean through beneath his clavicle and was being gently twisted with a slight up-and-down motion. The pain was so intense, he fainted.
Pulling the blade out of Harry’s shoulder, Vance pointed it to the other six men who were standing transfixed at the sight of the speed with which Vance had moved: a blur and then their leader was on the ground out cold.
Vance had a big, happy dog-grin on his face. “Make a move, gentlemen! Please!” Belot-Mool had swung his staff around and was now pointing it at the thugs. Vance thought it to be an odd stance for defense or attack, but said, “No need, Belot. I’m sure these fine fellows can see that this event is over. Am I right, scum?” They seemed to agree and turned to go. “Pick him up,” Vance said pointing to Harry’s quivering body. “No use cluttering up the street with this trash.” The men carefully moved to retrieve the injured man and as one bent down, Vance put his blade on one of the men’s throat. “If you see either me or my companions again, step aside. Another encounter like this and I guarantee death to all of you. Are we clear?” They nodded and grabbed Harry’s legs and ran back down the street with Harry’s head bumping in the ruts.
Vance turned to his companions. “Well! That was refreshing! I’m hungry. Are you hungry?”
